Nursing Chair vs Rocking Chair: What's the Difference?

These two terms get used almost interchangeably, but there is a real difference worth understanding before you buy.

Nursing chair: built for the task

A "nursing chair" typically refers to any chair designed specifically for feeding — often with a higher backrest, softer armrests, and sometimes a matching footstool. It may or may not rock.

Rocking chair: defined by the motion

A "rocking chair" simply refers to the rocking mechanism itself, and can be used for nursing, reading, or general relaxation — not just feeding.

So which should I choose?

For night feeds specifically, a chair that combines both — the supportive design of a nursing chair with the calming motion of a rocking chair — tends to offer the best of both.
